Day 88 Of Writing: Cancer Tips

Everyday is a brand new day, everyday is a journey.

Well may Thy happy children cease
From restless wishes, prone to sin,
And, in Thy own exceeding peace,
Yield to Thy daily discipline.
A. L. WARING.

So you just been diagnosed with cancer . . . now what?

1.Well first, take a deep breath. You've just been handed a great shock that hasn't really absorbed completely what that means. Take a moment to yourself, if that involves a quick cry, go ahead. Another deep breath.

2. Next, go home and have a sit down with your closest family or mates. This is the moment where we share all of our feelings. Have plenty of tissues on hand, because tears will be spilled. Share, cry, comfort.

3. Try to learn as much as you can about your type of cancer. Look up the side effects of the chemo or radiation or any type of medications you will be using. Also, try researching the long term side effects so you will be prepared on what to expect.

4. Check your options. Check your insurance and see what that actually covers when it comes to cancer. Check your work policies regarding short term disabilities as well as long term. Will you have to leave work for awhile? Perhaps FMLA while you're in treatment? Check these policies so you can make the right decisions for you and your family.

5. Make your plan of action. Will someone be going to treatment with you? Do you have children that will need to be picked up or delivered to school? This is a good time to make a list of who will be doing what while you are in treatment. All you should be worried about is making your appointments.

6. Prepare all you can. Check your calendar for any appointments or dates that need to be taken cared of right now. Or perhaps you may need to reschedule until after treatment. Stock up your pantry or refrigerator as much as you can. This will save tons of time when you are not feeling well.

7.Let everyone love on you. Nothing else matters now except the relationships you have with others. Spend time together. Allow people in your life and let them do things for you when offered. Let them carry you through this trial in your life.

These are just a couple of things I do now whenever my cancer returns. It also helps your mind focus on something other than the anxiety you may be feeling.

Have a blessed day everyone.
